As you can see from my last Blog post date, its been a while! Needless to say the world continues full speed on the roller coaster we now call the 21st Century.
The British people deciding to leave the EU, a global pandemic and now the war in Ukraine over the past 2 years has left myself and the general masses in a strange new world where the future is no longer bright.
Luckily for me the pandemic and resulting lockdowns were great. For years I have been carrying around the metaphorical and physical film archive which needed to be digitised and archived so when the first lockdown happened, the time seemed like a gift from the gods.
In March 2020 I was working on a film about Mary Quant, directed by the brilliant Sadie Frost when the head of Goldfinch came into the studio to inform the cast and crew that due to covid production would have to stop.
Like everyone at that time it seemed we were living in a dystopian film, living in constant fear from the news and life would never be the same again.
At that time and unbeknown to me the head of Goldfinch, Kirsty Bell was writing her own take on the pandemic and began writing ‘Alone’ (working title) which later became ‘A Bird Flew In’. A gorgeous black and white, film noir, story of a film production which is brought to an abrupt halt by the global pandemic and the film then follows the actors in during Lockdown.
In August of 2019 when the first Lockdown came to an end I was extremely fortunate to land the role of shooting unit, stills and epk for ‘A bird flew in’ which was a brilliant film to work. Produced by the ridiculously talented Ben Charles Edwards and directed by Kirsty Bell. The film has gone on to win several awards on the world circuit. Not sure when its available for general release but its a must see from me.
Portrait of my father
So last week I was commissioned to shoot a portrait for the legendary folk singer Ralph McTell. I was asked for a classic black and white portrait to use as an album cover. At 75 Ralph looks incredible but my brief was to capture the spirit and life experiences through every line, crease and wrinkle on his face. A brutally honest portrait.
I decided to shoot on the Fuji GFX digital medium format camera, which was kindly lent to me by Paul Bence, thanks Paul, and not wanting to appear stupid on a new system I decided to do a test shoot the night before with my 81yr father. As I was setting up the lights I realised I’d never done this before, I’d never sat my father down to shoot his portrait. I love this portrait and elated to have it. I urge all you photographers to capture the ones you love and sure enough that photograph will be priceless to you one day.
Experience Egypt WTM 2018
The team at Momentum UK asked me to cover the Experience Egypt stand at WTM 2018 held at Excel London.
Following the Egyptian Minister for Tourism, Rania Al-Mashat. Mainly reportage photography but I did manage to capture this lovely portrait of this incredibly hard working, dedicated, intelligent, inspiring woman in the Arab world.
Wyndham Bespoke Furniture
I had the pleasure of photographing the gorgeous Juliana Mizon in her amazing house for Wyndham Design which is featured in this months Absolutely Home Magazine.
The shoot went incredibly well and Juli with her hair stylist Gio Di Gesu were amazing. At the end of the shoot Juli informs me she’s only 2 days out of hospital after spinal surgery. Incredible. Copyright Chris Lopez 208
DMEXCO 2018 Cologne
My long term associate Romain Kedochim at Soda Visual got me on board to shoot with him at DMEXCO 2018 in the beautiful city of Cologne for non other than Facebook.
The Facebook stand was a buzz of activity with speakers and guests throughout the day. Breakfast meetings, lunches and evening events were created by the brilliant team at Innovision.
Romain and I make such a good team and I enjoyed every minute of it and learnt a lot about Instagram. Pushing the Instagram site from now on.
Stephen Rahman Hughes – Eastenders
Congrats to my old buddy Stephen Rahman Hughes for landing the role of Adam in Eastenders. Heres a shot we did back in 2005 for the Magnificent Strangers project/Henrik Takkenberg.
